This session will assist professionals in understanding the unique aspects of family grief when a family member is experiencing a substance use disorder, examined through the lens of Pauline Boss’s Ambiguous Grief research and therapy. It will then consider the unique challenges of coping with substance-related deaths and outline evidence-informed approaches for providing support.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate common modern grief theories in contrast to the traditional stage mode of grief and their applications in cases of addiction and overdose.
  • Describe the unique aspects of the disenfranchised grief experience of family members and friends who have lost a loved one to addiction.
  • Apply evidence-informed principles of grief support to family members of those experiencing ambiguous grief as a result of addiction and the grief of a substance use death.
