TOP 10 Membership Benefits

1          CCA is the state branch of the 50,000 member American Counseling Association (ACA)

Professional identity as a counselor is promoted by CCA and our parent organization, ACA.  CCA is the state branch of ACA’s Western Region, including 13 states, plus the Philippines: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.  CCA membership allows you to become involved locally – YOU may directly impact the happenings in Colorado’s counseling profession.  Find opportunities for networking and leadership in the counseling profession by joining the CCA governing council.

2          Legislative Updates

CCA has its own lobbyist, through Mendez Consulting, Inc. Mendez represents many of Colorado’s mental health professionals, including LPC’s, LMFT’s, and Addictions Counselors.  CCA members benefit from this professional representation at local, state, and national legislative levels.  Every year, CCA sends governing council executive member/s to the ACA Leadership Institute to lobby for professional counselors on Capitol Hill. On the CCA website, CCA members have access to regular updates on what is happening in the Colorado State Legislature related to the counseling profession.

3            LPC Licensing Guide

Whether you are a recent graduate of a counseling program or you are relocating to Colorado from another state, the licensing process can be confusing.  Navigating the DORA website and getting answers to your questions about licensure can be frustrating.  As a member of CCA, you have access to a guide on licensure for professional counselors in the State of Colorado.  COMING AUGUST, 2013!

4            Events and speaker’s Bureau

CCA members can join the Speaker’s Bureau, providing an opportunity for professional counselors to present to a variety of audiences on their specialties.  Community organizations, businesses and educational institutions seek CCA’s Speaker’s Bureau for presentation services.  Speaking engagements and events are planned regionally in Colorado’s Central, Northern, Southern, and Western communities.  Opportunities for CEU’s are available, based on the qualifications of the presenter. Contact the CCA Speaker’s Bureau Chair, Bita Rivas at brivas2@uccs.edu for information.

5            Legal and Ethical Support

CCA ethics committee provides consultation and referral information to CCA members for ethical dilemmas and decision making in counseling practice. While CCA cannot provide legal advice to members, CCA can give you information on who to contact to get legal advice or to represent counselors in case of grievances filed with DORA.

6         Annual Conference

CCA offers an annual conference with a keynote speaker and break-out sessions on topics most relevant to the counseling profession.  CEU’s or professional development hours available for these activities.  CCA members take advantage of lower conference fee rates.  CCA invites professional counselors to submit proposals to present on areas of expertise. At the conference, members are invited to an annual membership meeting and reception for members only.  Awards of distinction are given to the Counselor of the year, Counselor Educator of the Year, Graduate Student of the Year, and Supervisor of the Year.

7              Website and Social Media

Members can find information and announcements on counseling related topics via LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and the CCA website.  The CCA website offers a membership blog and forums for discussion, as well as postings for jobs, office space, and upcoming events.  CCA members receive marketing support with the ability to post via social media or the CCA website free of charge.  A quarterly newsletter is sent to members directly via e-mail, and available on the CCA website.  Advertising in the newsletter is discounted for members.  Find CCA at www.coloradocounselingassociation.org.

8            Student Membership

Membership in ACA and CCA is recommended for students to begin establishing a professional identity as a counselor.  Students are offered a low CCA student membership rate.  Specific leadership opportunities are available to graduate students and they are encouraged to get involved with leadership in the CCA governing council.  CCA has Graduate Student Liaisons at over 20 educational institutions – both online and classroom-based graduate counseling programs are represented throughout the State of Colorado.  There are Regional Leaders to connect members statewide: Denver Metro North, Denver Metro South, Northern Colorado, S. Central Colorado, and Southern Colorado.

9            Liability Insurance discount

Malpractice insurance companies often offer discounts for those who are members of their professional organization.  For example, CPH offers membership discounts to ACA and CCA Members.  In addition, CPH provides two hours of free legal advice each year with an attorney located in Colorado, who is familiar with specific state laws. CPH offers a 5% discount by signing up online and you get proof of coverage once the process is complete.  Find more information on the CPH website at www.cphins.com.

10        Counselor locator service

As a CCA member, potential clients can find you through the CCA counselor locator service.  Members can customize their CCA profile to attract and inform potential clients. Supervisors for professional counselor licensure can be identified through the CCA counselor locator service.
